Google Ads API Enforces $5 Demand Gen Budget Floor Starting April 1

The Development

Google will begin enforcing a $5 USD daily minimum budget for all Demand Gen campaigns via the Google Ads API on April 1, 2026. The change deploys as an unversioned API update, applying across all buying paths simultaneously regardless of API version in use. In API v21 and above, campaigns set below the threshold will return a BUDGET_BELOW_DAILY_MINIMUM error with supporting metadata. In API v20, advertisers will receive a generic UNKNOWN error, with the specific validation failure buried in an unpublished error code field. The enforcement triggers not only on direct budget edits but also when modifying campaign start or end dates in ways that push effective daily spend below the floor. Critically, existing Demand Gen campaigns already running below $5 daily will continue serving without interruption—but any future edit to budgets or scheduling will require immediate compliance.

Our Take

The $5 floor is nominal, but the operational risk is real. The asymmetry between API versions is the actual story here: teams running v20 will get an opaque UNKNOWN error with no clear path to diagnosis, while their campaigns quietly fail to update. Google frames this as supporting model learning during the cold-start phase, which is legitimate—underfunded Demand Gen campaigns genuinely do underperform. But the unversioned rollout means there's no grace period to upgrade API integrations first. Any automated bidding tool, campaign management platform, or custom script that touches Demand Gen budget or scheduling fields needs validation logic updated before April 1. The window is less than 30 days.

The Exploit

Action Item

If your team manages Demand Gen campaigns through the API or any third-party automation layer, audit every integration that touches budget or scheduling fields and add a $5 daily minimum validation gate before April 1 to prevent silent campaign failures on v20.
