Retail Media Hits $69B as M&A Signals End of Easy Growth
The Development
U.S. retail media network spending is on track to hit $69.33 billion by the end of 2026, cementing RMNs as the third wave of digital advertising. Digital now accounts for 87.1% of total retail ad spending, with paid media commanding the largest single budget share at 31%—predominantly flowing toward Amazon Sponsored Products and Walmart Search at the direct expense of Google Search and open-web display. According to Gartner's 2026 CMO Spend Survey, 52% of advertisers have reallocated display budgets to retail media DSPs specifically for closed-loop attribution. Simultaneously, a new wave of M&A activity is reshaping the competitive landscape as retail media companies pursue first-party data assets, signaling that the era of passive, organic RMN growth has ended. By 2027, one-fifth of all DOOH spending is forecast to originate from inside physical retail environments, including smart coolers and digital endcaps.
Our Take
The M&A surge is the signal that matters most here. When consolidation begins, it means the easy arbitrage—cheap placements, loose measurement standards, soft competition for shelf space—is over. Retail media networks built their pitch on closed-loop attribution, but closed loops only have value if the data inside them is rich and defensible. Companies are now acquiring that data rather than growing it organically because organic growth can no longer keep pace with advertiser demand for precision. For brand and performance marketers, this consolidation reshapes the negotiating dynamic entirely. The mid-tier RMNs that once competed aggressively on price and access will either get absorbed or irrelevant. What replaces them are scaled platforms with pricing power—much like what happened when programmatic consolidated around a handful of dominant SSPs. Brands that haven't locked in preferred partnership terms or diversified RMN exposure beyond Amazon are walking into a seller's market.
The Exploit
Action Item
If you're a CPG or retail brand spending more than $2M annually in retail media, audit your RMN contract renewal dates now and renegotiate data-sharing and CPM terms before Q3 2026, when post-M&A platform integrations will reset pricing leverage against buyers.
