Microsoft Fabric IQ Opens Shared AI Context Layer to All Vendors via MCP

The Development

Microsoft announced a significant expansion of Fabric IQ on March 18, 2026, moving its semantic intelligence layer—originally debuted in November 2025—beyond the Fabric ecosystem entirely. The business ontology is now accessible via Model Context Protocol (MCP), meaning agents built on any vendor's platform can query the same shared definitions of core business entities: customers, orders, regions, and operational rules. Alongside MCP access, Microsoft added enterprise planning functionality to Fabric IQ, combining historical data, real-time signals, and formal organizational goals into a single queryable layer. Fabric data agents reached general availability. A companion release, the Database Hub—now in early access—places Azure SQL, Azure Cosmos DB, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQL Server under a single management and observability plane inside Fabric. IDC research director Devin Pratt noted this aligns with IDC's projection that 60% of enterprise data platforms will unify transactional and analytical workloads by 2029.

Our Take

The actual problem Microsoft is solving here isn't compute or storage—it's that enterprise AI deployments are failing because agents disagree on what words mean. When your media-spend agent and your CRM agent define 'customer' differently, no amount of model sophistication fixes the downstream breakage. Fabric IQ's MCP opening is Microsoft's bid to become the definitional layer for enterprise intelligence—the shared context that makes multi-agent orchestration reliable rather than theoretically promising. For marketing technology leaders, the implication is immediate: the semantic layer is no longer a data team abstraction. It's the infrastructure your AI stack runs on, and it needs governance, versioning, and ownership the same way your data pipelines do. Most organizations haven't assigned that responsibility to anyone. The teams that build and maintain that ontology in 2026 control what every agent in the enterprise understands about the business.

The Exploit

Action Item

If your organization is evaluating multi-agent architectures this quarter, assign explicit ownership of your business ontology before Q2 2026 vendor decisions lock in—whoever defines the semantic layer first will dictate the integration cost for every agent added afterward.
