Sell-Side AI Agents Begin Beta Testing Across Publisher Ad Stacks
The Development
Publishers including News Corp, The Weather Company, and data clean room Optable are running live beta tests of sell-side AI agents capable of autonomously negotiating, packaging, and activating inventory deals. The tests follow AdCP's January donation of sell-side agent source code to Prebid, giving publishers an open framework to build on. The Weather Company's agent—built with Scope3—surfaces premium ad formats and audience segments to buy-side agents through a request-based flow, with human validation on pricing and availability. Optable's implementation uses Anthropic's Claude as the front end, allowing buyers to submit natural-language briefs that the agent converts into full campaign proposals, including programmatic deal setup in Google Ad Manager. News Corp's Vikesh Chevli describes agents as a "third channel" operating across both direct and programmatic tiers, with ambitions to eventually interact with all layers of the revenue stack.
Our Take
The framing of agents as a "third channel" is the most important signal buried in these pilots. Publishers aren't replacing direct or programmatic—they're adding a negotiation layer that sits above both, one that can be permissioned, authenticated, and monetized separately. That has structural implications for how SSPs and DSPs fit into the picture. If buy-side agents and sell-side agents begin transacting directly—even partially—intermediaries that add friction without adding intelligence face compression. The pilots are deliberately small and human-supervised, but the architecture being established now will define how inventory is discovered and priced at scale. The publishers controlling agent access controls will hold significant leverage in the next generation of deal-making.
