Zoho Analytics Becomes Agentic Platform With Native Semantic and Ontology Layers
The Development
Zoho Corporation announced an evolution of Zoho Analytics into an Agentic Analytics platform. Native semantic and ontology layers give AI agents a business glossary and a model of how entities relate. A multi-agent version of Ask Zia orchestrates six specialized sub-agents covering data analysis, visualization, preparation, modeling, coding and SQL generation. Customers can bring their own frontier model, build custom agents, and connect external tools via Model Context Protocol (MCP). More than 30 connectors join the existing 500-plus, including SAP, PayPal, Adobe Commerce and Twilio. Governance features include a data catalog with lineage, AI observability with usage and cost tracking, and sandbox deployment with rollback. A headless MCP server, a command-line interface and a Claude plug-in extend access beyond Zoho's own interface.
Our Take
The constraint on agentic marketing is no longer model quality. It is whether an agent knows that "qualified lead" means one thing to sales and another to marketing. Whoever owns the definitions owns the agent's judgment. Zoho is betting that mid-market firms will not fund a warehouse plus a standalone semantic layer, and will take a bundled one instead. The portability claim matters most: definitions that export blunt lock-in objections and make Zoho a context supplier for agents it does not build. The risk is execution. Native layers are only as good as the glossary your team writes, and most marketing organizations have never done that work.
What Changed
Agents can now query company data through governed business definitions instead of raw tables, inside the analytics tool itself, with no separate warehouse or semantic platform required. The same context can be exposed headlessly over MCP to external agents, so one metric definition serves every agent.
Marketing Impact
Marketing operations and analytics teams can stand up governed, conversational reporting on campaign, CRM and commerce data without SQL or analyst queues. Marketing ops inherits a new job: defining metrics, such as lead stages, attribution windows and revenue, in a machine-readable glossary that every agent will then obey.
Competitive Implication
Zoho-stack mid-market marketers gain agent-ready context with no added infrastructure. Standalone semantic-layer vendors and BI tools without native context layers lose ground, because bundling undercuts their pricing. Enterprises already invested in Snowflake or Databricks semantic tooling face little pressure, so the threat concentrates below the enterprise tier.
Strategic Outlook
Expect the major analytics and CRM suites to ship competing native context layers within two to three quarters, and MCP exposure to become table stakes by mid-2027. Semantic portability standards will decide whether context layers become interchangeable utilities or the next lock-in battleground between platform vendors.
The Exploit
Action Item
Marketing ops leads on Zoho should write a single governed glossary of their ten most-disputed metrics in the semantic layer before Q1 2027 planning, then pilot a custom agent against it.
